There is within you something that knows you better than you know yourself.

James Hollis, Jungian analyst

What Is Focusing?

At its heart, Focusing is a way of listening — listening inwardly, to the quiet felt sense that forms in the body beneath words, images, or thoughts. Developed by philosopher and psychotherapist Eugene Gendlin, Focusing grew out of research into what actually helps people change. He found that those who could pause, sense into their experience, and stay with what was not yet fully clear — those were the people who realized growth and change.

This capacity can be learned. And that is what Focusing offers: a practice that helps you listen inwardly with respect and curiosity, until something fresh and life-giving begins to unfold.

Focusing can help you:

  • Move through times of transition with greater steadiness
  • Rediscover meaning and direction when life feels uncertain
  • Reconnect with your own inner guidance
  • Connect  or deepen your relationship with what feels sacred in your life

Why Inner Relationship Focusing?

Over time, Focusing has continued to evolve. Focusing teachers Ann Weiser Cornell, who studied directly under Eugene Gendlin, and Barbara McGavin jointly developed Inner Relationship Focusing, a way of approaching the inner life with radical gentleness and compassion. Instead of trying to push away, analyze, or change what we find inside, we meet it with respect and kindness.

This changes everything. The very places in us that may feel stuck, critical, or wounded begin to soften and reveal their own wisdom when they are treated with compassion and curiosity. Inner Relationship Focusing helps us cultivate a reliable “inner home” where all parts of us are welcome.

I feel deeply fortunate to be training directly with Ann and Barbara. Their teaching is shaping the way I bring this practice to others, and I am currently offering sessions at a special reduced rate while I complete my certification. This makes now a wonderful time to experience the power of Focusing for yourself.

How Focusing Differs From Therapy

Though Focusing can certainly be used within the psychotherapy context, Focusing in and of itself is not psychotherapy.

  • Therapy is about healing from pain, addressing symptoms, and working through emotional or psychological difficulties.
  • Focusing is about growth, presence, and learning to listen to the wisdom already within you. When you come to me for a Focusing session, I will be helping you to learn a practice of discovering this internal wisdom.

This website is dedicated solely to teaching and guiding Inner Relationship Focusing. If you are looking for psychotherapy services, please visit my therapy website at kimbeckertherapy.com.
